LÍNGUA Festival - Minority Languages Theatre

· Barcelos

The LÍNGUA Festival returns to Barcelos from June 5 to 7, 2026, dedicated to minority languages and contemporary theatre creation. Three days of international performances at Theatro Gil Vicente.

From June 5 to 7, 2026, Theatro Gil Vicente in Barcelos becomes the epicentre of one of the most unique festivals on the Portuguese cultural scene: the LÍNGUA Festival. This international gathering is dedicated to celebrating minority languages through contemporary theatre, promoting dialogue between cultures that are often left out of mainstream narratives.

For three intense days, the festival brings together companies and creators from different regions, offering audiences a vibrant mosaic of performances where language is not just a means of communication but artistic raw material. Expect productions in Mirandese, Galician, Basque, Catalan and other minority European languages, always with translation or surtitles to ensure accessibility for Portuguese and international audiences.

The LÍNGUA Festival positions itself as a space for cultural resistance and a celebration of linguistic diversity. At a time when many minority languages are threatened, the festival proposes thinking about theatre as a tool for preservation and revitalisation. The programme combines performances from established creators with new proposals from young artists, in a rich and stimulating intergenerational dialogue.

Beyond the performances, the festival typically includes conversations with artists, workshops and informal gatherings that bring audiences closer to creation. It is a unique opportunity to discover Barcelos as a cultural destination and to experience a form of theatre that challenges borders.

Theatro Gil Vicente, in the heart of the historic centre of Barcelos, is the ideal stage for this gathering. The city also offers an excellent complementary programme, with the discovery of Romanesque heritage, the Mother Church, the Palace of the Dukes of Bragança, and the emblematic ceramic production and the famous Rooster of Barcelos.
