Hugo Alves Quartet | Vamos à Vila Monchique
The Hugo Alves Quartet, from the Algarve Jazz Orchestra, performs in Monchique on 1 June 2026, as part of the "Vamos à Vila" programme. Free jazz concerts in the mountain village.
On 1 June 2026, the village of Monchique welcomes the Hugo Alves Quartet, a formation of the renowned Algarve Jazz Orchestra (OJA), for two concerts as part of the "Vamos à Vila" programme, an initiative by the Municipality of Monchique to energise the cultural life of the mountain region.
The quartet led by musician Hugo Alves performs at two distinct moments: at noon, in a morning concert conceived as a musical aperitif for those visiting the village, and at 5:00 PM in a second afternoon concert that closes the day's programme. Both performances take place in outdoor venues in the village of Monchique, with free admission.
The Hugo Alves Quartet's repertoire blends contemporary jazz with influences from Portuguese and Mediterranean music, in a show that combines the genre's typical improvisation with sounds rooted in the Algarve. The OJA - Algarve Jazz Orchestra has established itself as one of the main promoters of jazz in southern Portugal, bringing quality concerts to Algarvian villages and towns often far from the main cultural circuits.
The "Vamos à Vila" programme runs from 30 May to 1 June 2026 and celebrates local traditions with musical entertainment in various spaces around the village, children's activities, traditional gastronomy and crafts. It is a chance to discover Monchique at its best: mountain, culture, music and hospitality.
The Hugo Alves Quartet concerts are free and open to the public. Arriving early is recommended to secure a spot, especially for the 5:00 PM concert, and the visit can be combined with exploring local cuisine, the waters of Caldas de Monchique, and the landscapes of Fóia and Picota nearby.
