Folklore Festival and Traditional Wedding with Boda - Alte
The village of Alte brings back one of the Algarve's most authentic traditions: the re-enactment of a rural wedding, followed by a folklore festival with regional groups. A journey into Algarve ethnography by the springs of Alte.
On the second Saturday of August - 8 August 2026 - the village of Alte, in the municipality of Loulé, becomes the stage for one of the most authentic ethnographic traditions in the Algarve: the Traditional Wedding Ceremony with Boda, followed by a Folklore Festival. The event is organised by Casa do Povo de Alte, with support from Loulé Municipal Council, and aims to keep alive a centuries-old tradition linked to rural weddings in the Algarve hills.
The "Boda" faithfully recreates, with period costumes and ethnographic accuracy, the ceremonial of a traditional peasant wedding: the procession, the formal proposals, the blessing and the celebration that followed, complete with music, singing and typical mountain snacks. Festivities begin around 6pm by the Fonte Grande, one of Alte's landmarks and a spring that has shaped the village's social life for centuries.
Alongside the Boda's atmosphere, visitors can enjoy traditional food and drink - smoked sausages, homemade bread, goat's cheese and local wine - served while live music plays. Around 9pm, the wedding procession sets off from near Casa do Povo de Alte and winds through the village's narrow, whitewashed streets, one of the most photographed moments of the event, followed by performances from several Algarve folklore groups, including the Casa do Povo de Alte folk group, which re-enacts the region's traditional peasant wedding dances.
Alte is already one of inland Algarve's most sought-after destinations, with its springs, watermills and a river running beneath poplar trees, and this event reinforces its identity as a village that keeps its roots alive. For visitors, it's a rare chance to see up close the costumes, music and popular customs that are seldom found outside the traditional festival calendar of the region's hillside villages.
There are no tickets or prior registration: participation is free and the event takes place outdoors, so it's recommended to arrive early to secure a spot by the Fonte Grande and wear comfortable shoes to follow the procession through the streets of Alte.
