Folk Azores – 40th International Folklore Festival of the Azores
For one week in August, Angra do Heroísmo welcomes traditional music and dance groups from several continents for the 40th edition of Folk Azores. Performances take place in the city's squares and halls, with free admission, in a meeting of cultures that has become a Terceira landmark.
Folk Azores reaches its 40th edition in 2026, confirming its status as the largest international folklore festival in the Azores. From 9 to 16 August, Angra do Heroísmo — a UNESCO World Heritage city — becomes an open-air stage where traditional music and dance groups from around the world meet the folk ensembles of Terceira Island.
Organised with the support of Angra do Heroísmo City Council, the festival's stated purpose is to promote the encounter between cultures from different parts of the world through music, dance and popular traditions. Across eight days, the programme includes gala performances, parades through the historic centre, decentralised shows in the municipality's parishes, and informal moments of exchange between performers and audiences.
The main gathering point is Praça Velha, in the heart of the city, in front of the Town Hall. This is where the busiest performances take place, usually in the late afternoon and evening, when August's mild temperatures make staying outdoors a pleasure. Parades, featuring traditional costumes of striking colour and detail, then wind down the cobbled streets towards Jardim Duque da Terceira and the waterfront.
For anyone visiting Terceira in August, Folk Azores is a rare chance to see intangible heritage from very different countries performed free of charge, in one place and within a few days. Admission to all performances is free, which makes the festival especially attractive for families.
The dates coincide with the peak of Terceira's tourist season, so booking accommodation in Angra and inter-island flights well in advance is strongly recommended. The historic centre is entirely walkable, and the main sights — the Cathedral, the Fortress of São João Baptista, Monte Brasil and Jardim Duque da Terceira — are just minutes from the performance venues. During festival days, parking in the centre is limited; leaving the car in outlying areas is the better option.
