Festival in Honour of Our Lady of the Sea 2026

· Zambujeira do Mar

Zambujeira do Mar honours its patron saint on 15 August with the traditional blessing of the fishermen at the fishing port, followed by a procession to the clifftop chapel and an open-air mass. It is one of the most emblematic summer moments on the Costa Vicentina.

Every year on 15 August, the fishing village of Zambujeira do Mar pays tribute to its patron saint, Nossa Senhora do Mar (Our Lady of the Sea), in one of the most genuine and moving religious festivals on the Alentejo coast. Organised by the Parish of São Teotónio, with the support of the local parish council and the Municipality of Odemira, the celebration brings together fishermen, local families and thousands of visitors who fill the village at the height of summer.

The religious programme usually extends through the preceding week, with rosary prayers on the evenings of 9 to 13 August and a prayer vigil at the Chapel Square on the night of 14 August. The highlight comes on the 15th: in the late afternoon, around 5:30 pm, the image of Our Lady of the Sea is carried to the Zambujeira fishing port at Entrada da Barca, where the blessing of the fishermen and their boats takes place. When sea conditions allow, the image even arrives by boat, a deeply symbolic moment that recalls this community's profound bond with the ocean.

A solemn procession then climbs from the port to the small white chapel of Nossa Senhora do Mar, perched on the cliff above the beach in one of Portugal's most photogenic settings. The day culminates with an open-air mass at the Chapel Square, usually around 7 pm, with the Atlantic as a backdrop and the sunset painting the Costa Vicentina sky.

For anyone visiting the Southwest Alentejo in August, this festival is a rare chance to experience the authenticity of a centuries-old maritime tradition, far from large commercial tourist events. The village takes on a special buzz, with decorated streets and local shops and restaurants in full swing.

Entry is free. Arriving early is recommended, as parking in the village is limited at this time of year. Take the opportunity to explore Zambujeira beach, the viewpoint next to the chapel and the Rota Vicentina trails that pass through the village. Confirm the detailed programme with the Odemira tourist office or the Parish of São Teotónio before your visit.
