Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel - Sanfins do Douro

· Pinhão

Sanfins do Douro celebrates its traditional Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel from June 12-14, 2026, opening with the iconic Puxada de Bombos drum parade. One of the most distinctive religious and popular festivals in the Alijó municipality, near Pinhão.

From June 12 to 14, 2026, the village of Sanfins do Douro, in the Alijó municipality and a short drive from Pinhão, celebrates the traditional Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. This is one of the most deeply rooted religious and popular festivities in the Douro plateau calendar, bringing together emigrants, visitors, and the local community for three days of faith, music, and conviviality.

The program opens on Friday, June 12, with the iconic Puxada de Bombos, a unique popular event in which groups of bass drummers parade through the village streets to the intense rhythm of their drums, announcing the start of the festival and inviting everyone to join the celebration. The sound of the bombos echoes across the terraced vineyards and sets the festive mood that will continue for the following days.

Throughout the weekend, there are solemn masses, a procession in honor of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, outdoor festivities with brass bands and dance groups, fireworks, and food and drink stalls around the parish church. The village streets are decorated with traditional arches and lighting, and local gastronomy — roasted meats, regional cakes, and Douro wines — is ever-present.

For visitors staying in Pinhão, the trip to Sanfins do Douro (about 12 km away) is an excellent way to experience an authentic festival of the Douro interior, away from the more touristic circuits. It is an opportunity to discover the religious and cultural traditions passed down from generation to generation in this UNESCO World Heritage wine region.

Admission is free and the atmosphere is family-friendly. Arriving early on the Puxada de Bombos night is recommended to follow the parade from the start and to park comfortably in the village streets.
