Elvas Medieval Festival 2026
Elvas's UNESCO World Heritage historic centre travels back in time from 2 to 5 July with the Medieval Festival. Four days of historical reenactments, artisans, taverns and shows that recreate the city's medieval life. Free admission.
The Elvas Medieval Festival returns from 2 to 5 July 2026, transforming the historic centre of this Alentejo city — classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site — into an authentic journey into the past. Organised by the Municipality of Elvas, it is one of the region's most prominent summer events, drawing thousands of visitors eager to relive the traditions and customs of the Middle Ages.
Over four days, the streets, squares and 17th-century walls of Elvas fill with colour, music and entertainment. The programme features historical reenactments, processions and parades, knightly tournaments, street theatre, craft workshops and demonstrations of traditional trades. Jugglers, acrobats, archers and falconry displays add to the immersive atmosphere that takes over the whole city.
Visitors can also enjoy medieval banquets, taverns serving period cuisine, and markets selling handmade crafts and local products. Families with children will find dedicated attractions such as traditional games and donkey and camel rides. The gastronomy is one of the highlights, with genuine flavours served in a festive setting.
The setting could not be more fitting: the fortified complex of Elvas, with its imposing star-shaped bastion walls and the Amoreira Aqueduct, offers a unique backdrop for this celebration of history. Admission to the festival is free, making it an excellent option for a weekend of cultural discovery in the Alentejo.
Visitors are advised to book accommodation in advance given the high demand during the event. Elvas sits near the Spanish border and is easily accessible from Lisbon, Évora or Badajoz.
