Corpus Christi Festival 2026 - Penafiel City Festival
On 4 June 2026, Penafiel celebrates its centuries-old Corpus Christi Festival, one of the country's oldest traditions blending the sacred and the secular. The Carneirinho parade, Cavalhada and the majestic procession fill the city streets.
The Corpus Christi Festival in Penafiel is one of the oldest and most deeply rooted traditions in Portugal, with nearly 500 years of history. In 2026, the celebration peaks on 4 June, the liturgical day of Corpus Christi (Corpo de Deus), and forms part of the Penafiel City and Municipality Festivities, drawing thousands of visitors to the historic centre of this Sousa Valley city.
What makes these festivities unique in Portugal is how they blend the sacred and the secular in one single programme. The festival opens with the traditional Cortejo do Carneirinho (Little Lamb Parade), instituted in the late 19th century by local schoolchildren, in which preschool and primary school pupils parade through the city streets, symbolising innocence and renewal.
Another highlight is the Cavalhada, a horseback procession with figures in historical costume that crosses the centre of Penafiel. But it is undoubtedly the Corpus Christi Procession that is the climax of the festivities: unique in the country, it features religious figures, richly decorated andors (religious floats), philharmonic bands and the traditional parades of the old trade guilds — blacksmiths, florists, stonemasons and other traditional crafts — all dressed in their finest attire.
Throughout the festive days there are also drum nights, concerts featuring national artists, street entertainment, fireworks and traditional local gastronomy in stalls scattered around the city. The Town Hall (Paços do Concelho) and the historic centre are the main stage, with special focus on Praça do Município, the Mother Church and the city's main avenues.
For visitors, it's the perfect opportunity to discover Penafiel — land of vinho verde, granite and thermal springs — while experiencing a celebration that keeps the territory's identity alive. Admission to all public events is free.
