Belmonte Medieval 2026 – The Legend Reborn
The oldest medieval fair in Beira Interior returns to Belmonte from 14 to 16 August 2026. The historic village becomes an authentic medieval town with processions, jousting tournaments, falconry, street theatre and period gastronomy.
From 14 to 16 August 2026, Belmonte travels back in time with the 21st edition of Belmonte Medieval, the oldest medieval fair in Beira Interior and one of Portugal's largest historical re-enactment events, drawing around 100,000 visitors each year.
Under the motto "The Legend Reborn", the historic quarter of the village — birthplace of Pedro Álvares Cabral, the navigator who reached Brazil — becomes an authentic 12th- to 15th-century town, covering roughly 3 hectares within a 1-kilometre perimeter. Along Rua 1.º de Maio, Largo José Afonso, Largo Ponta Delgada, Largo do Brasil and Largo de Santarém, visitors mingle with merchants, beggars, clerics and knights, all beneath the imposing silhouette of Belmonte Castle.
The programme unfolds across four stages — the Castle, Praça Manuelina, Praça de São Pedro and the Pillory — with 50 to 70 performers delivering close to a hundred shows: historical processions, jousting tournaments, falconry displays, open-air theatre and live music. The highlight is the famous Assault on the Castle, the theatrical spectacle that symbolically closes the re-enactment.
Food is another major draw: around 100 artisans and traders and five medieval taverns serve regional specialities from the Beira region in a period setting. About 80% of the stalls are run by residents of Belmonte and neighbouring villages, giving the event a strong community spirit.
In 2026 the fairground opens on 14 August from 6:30 pm to 2:00 am, on 15 August from 6:00 pm to 2:00 am, and on 16 August from 6:00 pm until midnight, with food and drink stalls allowed to open from noon. According to the municipality's 2026 regulations, entry to the grounds is free unless otherwise determined by the organisers — check access conditions with the Municipality of Belmonte before visiting.
