Arrifana Fishermen's Festival
The traditional Fishermen's Festival returns to Portinho da Arrifana on the last weekend of July, with a sea procession, blessing of the boats, grilled sardines and plenty of entertainment. One of the most emblematic celebrations of the Algarve's Vicentine coast.
The Arrifana Fishermen's Festival is one of the most anticipated summer celebrations in the municipality of Aljezur. Organised annually by the local fishing community, this traditional festival takes place on the last weekend of July, turning the small harbour of Arrifana into a vibrant stage of culture, faith and conviviality.
The highlight of the festival is the maritime procession, in which the decorated fishing boats carry the image of the patron saint on a solemn loop out to sea, accompanied by the blessing of the fleet and prayers for a bountiful catch in the year ahead. This centuries-old ritual, deeply rooted in Arrifana's identity, draws fishermen, families and visitors from across the region.
On land, the popular celebration features live music, dancing, folk group performances and a festive atmosphere that lasts well into the night. Gastronomy is, of course, the star of the event: charcoal-grilled sardines, fresh fish, seafood stews and traditional sweets fill the stalls set up alongside the cliff, with privileged views of the Atlantic sunset.
The festival is also a unique chance to discover the fishing village of Arrifana, learn about the work of local fishermen and taste seafood caught that very day. On the following Sunday, the Arrifana Sunset Fest traditionally takes place, with sunset concerts in the same breathtaking setting.
For those visiting the Algarve in July, this is an authentic experience, far from mass tourism, celebrating the maritime soul of the Costa Vicentina. Arrive early, as parking at the harbour is limited, and bring a light layer for the evening sea breeze.
