Algarve Open Water Swimming Circuit – Monte Gordo Stage
Monte Gordo beach hosts the opening stage of the 2026 Algarve Open Water Swimming Circuit, with ocean swimming races for all ages and levels. A sporting event in the heart of the Algarve summer.
The Algarve Open Water Swimming Circuit kicks off on June 7, 2026 at Monte Gordo beach, in Vila Real de Santo António, with a stage that brings together swimmers of all ages and levels to compete in the Atlantic waters of the eastern Algarve. Organised by the Algarve Swimming Association in partnership with MultiCrono and the Municipality of Vila Real de Santo António, the circuit is one of the most important open-water swimming competitions in southern Portugal.
The Monte Gordo stage opens the national open-water season and attracts hundreds of federated and amateur swimmers, distributed across several distances – typically 1,000m, 2,500m and 5,000m – adapted to different age categories and technical levels. There are also shorter races for younger participants, turning the event into a true celebration of aquatic sport.
The choice of Monte Gordo is no coincidence: the beach offers an extensive sandy area, calm waters and excellent logistical conditions, being one of the most popular seaside destinations in the Algarve. The organisers set up the entire start and finish structure on the sand, with marker buoys in the sea and aquatic safety teams accompanying every race.
For spectators, the stage is a unique opportunity to watch an exciting competition for free against the stunning backdrop of the eastern Algarve coast, with views of the Guadiana estuary and Spain in the distance. After the races, there is also beachside entertainment, prize-giving ceremonies and the chance to enjoy the restaurants and terraces of Monte Gordo's seafront avenue.
Registrations to participate are made through the MultiCrono platform and the Algarve Swimming Association (Analgarve). Access as a spectator is free. Visitors to the region in early June will find an excellent excuse here to combine beach, sport and the discovery of local gastronomy.
