4th Marine Forests Festival 2026
The 4th edition of the Marine Forests Festival takes place from May 13-22, 2026 in Vila Nova de Milfontes, Odemira municipality. The event promotes marine conservation through scientific initiatives, educational activities and coastal environment discovery experiences.
The 4th edition of the Marine Forests Festival returns to Vila Nova de Milfontes from May 13-22, 2026, with a ten-day program dedicated to raising awareness about marine environment conservation. Organized by CCMAR (Centre of Marine Sciences of the Algarve), Colégio Nossa Senhora da Graça, the Municipality of Odemira and the University of Algarve, the festival offers a diverse range of initiatives and experiences for all audiences.
The event focuses on marine forests — underwater ecosystems of vital importance to coastal biodiversity — and seeks to bring together scientists, students, residents and visitors around ocean protection. Over the ten days, participants can expect moments of scientific knowledge sharing, environmental awareness activities and hands-on experiences discovering the coastline and marine environment.
Vila Nova de Milfontes, one of the most charming towns on the Vicentine Coast, provides the perfect setting for this festival. Located at the mouth of the Mira River, the town combines stunning beaches with rich natural heritage, forming an integral part of the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park. It is an increasingly popular destination for travelers who value nature tourism and sustainability.
The Marine Forests Festival stands out for bringing science and community together in an accessible and engaging way. Previous editions have included interpretive coastal walks, marine biodiversity workshops, talks by researchers, activities for children and families, and opportunities for direct contact with the coastal ecosystem. It is a unique opportunity to learn about the importance of the oceans while enjoying one of Portugal's most beautiful regions.
For tourists visiting the Alentejo coast in May, this festival offers an enriching way to complement a beach holiday with culture, science and environmental awareness. Participating in the activities is an excellent way to better understand the natural heritage of the Vicentine Coast and contribute to its preservation.
