4th Marine Forests Festival
The 4th edition of the Marine Forests Festival takes place in Vila Nova de Milfontes from May 13-22, 2026. A week dedicated to marine conservation featuring coastal ecosystem discovery activities, workshops, and scientific knowledge sharing.
The 4th edition of the Marine Forests Festival returns to Vila Nova de Milfontes, in the municipality of Odemira, from May 13-22, 2026. Over ten days, this unique initiative brings together the community, experts, and visitors in a celebration dedicated to marine conservation and the promotion of the Alentejo coast's marine ecosystems.
Organized by the Odemira Municipal Council in partnership with CCMAR – Centre for Marine Sciences at the University of the Algarve and Colégio de Nossa Senhora da Graça, the festival's central aim is to bring the public closer to understanding the importance of marine forests and their fundamental role in ocean health.
Marine forests, formed by organisms such as algae and other species that structure coastal ecosystems, play a vital role in maintaining biodiversity, producing oxygen, and capturing carbon, contributing significantly to climate change mitigation and ocean balance. The festival seeks to make these topics accessible to all audiences.
Throughout the week, participants can expect a diverse program including marine environment discovery activities, scientific knowledge-sharing sessions, hands-on workshops, and environmental awareness initiatives. The detailed program will be announced by the organizers in the weeks leading up to the event.
Vila Nova de Milfontes, one of the most sought-after seaside resorts on the Vicentine Coast, provides the perfect setting for this festival. Located at the mouth of the Mira River, the town combines stunning beaches with rich natural heritage that makes the festival's message even more relevant. Visitors can take the opportunity to explore the region's beaches, walk the Rota Vicentina trails, and discover the local gastronomy.
Admission to festival activities is typically free, making it accessible to families, students, and visitors of all ages. It's a unique opportunity to combine tourism with environmental education in one of the most preserved regions of the Portuguese coast.
