16th Century Market of Machico 2026
Machico travels back five centuries to recreate the historical atmosphere of Madeira's discovery. Three days of medieval entertainment with reenactments, live music, artisans and period gastronomy in the historic centre.
The 16th Century Market of Machico returns in 2026 for another unmissable edition, transforming the historic centre of Madeira's first city into an authentic 16th-century setting. From 5 to 7 June, Largo da Praça and Alameda Dr. José António de Almada fill with colour, sound and movement to celebrate the discovery of the Madeira archipelago.
Organised by Machico Town Hall in partnership with Machico Basic and Secondary School, this cultural event is one of the region's most iconic. Starting at 9:00 PM, the public is transported to the Age of Discovery, with costumed reenactments, knightly duels, fire-eaters, acrobats and open-air theatre.
The market features dozens of stalls selling artisanal products inspired by the sixteenth century, from ceramics and wickerwork to spices, traditional sweets and medieval delicacies. Visitors can watch demonstrations of ancient crafts and taste dishes prepared according to 15th- and 16th-century recipes.
Throughout the three days, the programme includes traditional and medieval music concerts, horseback parades, popular games for children and historical reenactments that evoke the arrival of João Gonçalves Zarco and Tristão Vaz Teixeira at Machico in 1419. All entertainment is free, with open access for all ages.
Organisers recommend arriving early, especially at the weekend, due to the high visitor numbers — the event attracts thousands of people from Madeira, mainland Portugal and abroad. Free parking is available in surrounding areas, though public transport is advised during the weekend.
The 16th Century Market of Machico is a unique opportunity to discover Madeira's history in an immersive way, with a festive atmosphere combining education, culture and entertainment. A must for anyone visiting the island in June.
