Saint Isabel Festival - Castro Laboreiro

· Melgaço

Traditional religious festival in honour of Saint Isabel (Santa Maria da Visitação) in the mountain village of Castro Laboreiro, in the municipality of Melgaço. A centuries-old celebration that brings together devotion, folk music, traditional gastronomy and the conviviality of the mountain people.

The Festival in Honour of Saint Isabel, originally known as Santa Maria da Visitação, is one of the most emblematic religious festivals on the Castro Laboreiro plateau, in the municipality of Melgaço. Held annually on the first Sunday of July, this religious and popular celebration attracts pilgrims, returning emigrants and visitors who discover in this Alto Minho mountain range one of the most authentic corners of Portugal.

Castro Laboreiro, nestled in the Peneda-Gerês National Park at over 1,000 metres of altitude, offers a stunning setting for this festival. The festivities extend over several days, combining moments of deep religiosity with genuine expressions of Minho popular culture. The solemn procession, with the image of Saint Isabel carried through the village streets, is the spiritual highlight of the festival, bringing together the local community and the emigrants who return specifically for this occasion.

After the religious moments, the festival transforms into a vibrant popular celebration. The nighttime gatherings fill with traditional music, folk groups and brass bands that liven up the square until dawn. The smell of roast kid, posta à mirandesa, corn bread, local smoked meats and traditional pastries fills the air, accompanied by the inevitable Alvarinho wine from the region.

For visitors, this is a unique opportunity to experience one of the best-preserved traditions of northern Portugal, in an extraordinary landscape setting where the famous Castro Laboreiro dog still survives, along with the brandas and inverneiras (transhumance villages) and millennial granite architecture. Visitors can also explore the Castle of Castro Laboreiro, the National Park trails and the local ecomuseum.

It is recommended to arrive early to secure parking and enjoy the full programme, which usually also includes sporting activities, handicraft exhibitions and gastronomic tastings.
