Lamego Beach Volleyball Festival 2026
On 29 and 30 August 2026 the Lamego Municipal Pool Complex hosts the Beach Volleyball Festival, organised by the Viseu Volleyball Association. Open to participants aged 16 and over, taking part is completely free. A sporty open-air weekend in the heart of the Douro.
Summer in Lamego isn't only pilgrimages and wine: the Beach Volleyball Festival brings sand, sun and sport to the Lamego Municipal Pool Complex on 29 and 30 August 2026. Organised by the Viseu Volleyball Association with support from Lamego Municipality, the event closes a summer programme dedicated to the sport.
The Beach Volleyball Festival is open to participants aged 16 and over and taking part is free of charge. No previous experience is required: the aim is to promote the sport in a relaxed, sociable setting, with matches, informal tournaments and coaching from association staff. Ahead of the festival, the same venue hosts the "Beach Volleyball" programme from 17 to 28 August for children aged 8 and over — a free introductory course ideal for families holidaying in the Douro region (registration by 14 August).
The Lamego Municipal Pool Complex is an easily accessible sports facility close to the city centre, with outdoor sand courts, swimming pools, changing rooms and shaded areas. For families, it's a refreshing alternative on hot August afternoons in Portugal's northern interior, where temperatures frequently top 30 °C.
What's nearby: the event pairs perfectly with a city visit. Minutes away stand the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios with its monumental Baroque stairway, Lamego Cathedral, the Lamego Museum — housed in a former episcopal palace and rated among Portugal's finest regional museums — and the sparkling wine cellars that built the city's winemaking reputation.
Note that these dates overlap with the start of the Our Lady of Remedies Festival (from 27 August), so anyone visiting Lamego that weekend will find the city in full festive swing, with nightly street parties, free concerts and stalls serving Douro cuisine.
