Festivities of Our Lady of Lapa 2026
The Festivities of Our Lady of Lapa return to Arcos de Valdevez from 1 to 9 August 2026. Nine days of folklore, drum groups, ethnographic parades, a river festival with allegorical boats, fireworks and the solemn procession honouring the town's patron saint.
The Festivities of Our Lady of Lapa (Festas de Nossa Senhora da Lapa e do Concelho) are the highlight of summer in Arcos de Valdevez. In 2026 they take place from 1 to 9 August, filling the historic town centre and the banks of the River Vez with music and colour. Organised by FOLIA – Associação de Festas, this is one of the most authentic celebrations in Portugal's Alto Minho region, blending religious devotion, popular tradition and non-stop street entertainment.
The programme brings together everything that defines Minho identity: folklore groups and improvised singing duels (cantares ao desafio), popular parades known as rusgas, thundering drum groups (bombos), open-air dances that stretch late into the night, and brass bands roaming the town. Agricultural and livestock competitions and ethnographic parades celebrate the municipality's rural heritage, while local gastronomy — including the famous honey cake and egg-based sweets of Arcos — can be sampled in the streets and festival stalls.
Among the most eagerly awaited moments are the river festival on the Vez, with its traditional illuminated allegorical boats, the Ínsua do Vez celebration, and the spectacular fireworks displays that light up the night sky. On the religious side, the climax is the solemn procession in honour of Our Lady of Lapa, winding through decorated streets beside the town's emblematic oval-plan Baroque church, designed by architect André Soares.
The heart of the festivities is the Campo do Trasladário on Avenida Recontro do Valdevez, a large riverside space that hosts concerts and most of the entertainment. All street programming is free to attend.
For anyone visiting the Alto Minho in August, these festivities offer a unique chance to experience Minho folk culture at its most genuine, between the Peneda-Gerês mountains and the banks of the Vez. Check the official programme with the organisers or the Arcos de Valdevez tourist office.
