Festa do Faial 2026 – Our Lady of the Nativity Festival

Festa do Faial, also known as the Feast of Our Lady of the Nativity, is one of the most traditional and popular festivities in the municipality of Santana, on Madeira's north coast. Held annually in the parish of Faial, the festival pays homage to the local patron saint and brings together residents, emigrants and visitors in a celebration that blends faith, tradition and popular festivity.

For three days, the parish square turns into a genuine Madeiran street fair, with food stalls serving regional dishes, traditional sweets, Madeira wine and poncha, alongside stands selling local handicrafts. The programme includes performances by folklore groups, philharmonic bands and concerts by national and regional artists, creating a lively atmosphere that stretches well into the night.

The religious highlight of the festival is the solemn mass followed by a procession in honour of Our Lady of the Nativity, when the saint's image is carried through the streets of the parish, accompanied by worshippers, marching bands and fireworks. This moment reflects the strong religious devotion that characterises Madeira's rural communities and is one of the most photographed aspects of the celebration for visitors to the island at this time of year.

For tourists, Festa do Faial is also an excellent opportunity to explore this picturesque coastal parish, known for its dramatic cliffs, natural pools and views over the Atlantic Ocean.
