Feast of the Blessed Sacrament – Seixal, Porto Moniz

· Porto Moniz

From 22 to 24 August, Seixal hosts the biggest religious festival of the parish, in the municipality of Porto Moniz. Festivities kick off with the traditional 'cabritada' (goat stew) at Praia da Laje beach and continue with a Madeiran arraial full of music, food and community spirit.

The Feast of the Blessed Sacrament (Festa do Santíssimo Sacramento) is the biggest annual event in Seixal, a parish in the municipality of Porto Moniz on Madeira's stunning north coast. From 22 to 24 August, what is considered the largest religious festival of the parish brings together the local community, emigrants returning home and a growing number of visitors drawn by the authenticity of the celebration.

The festivities begin in a truly unique way: with the traditional 'cabritada' — a communal goat stew feast — at Praia da Laje beach, where locals actively take part in preparing the meal by the sea. This seaside gathering, with the Atlantic as a backdrop and the lush green cliffs of the north coast all around, is one of the most genuine moments of the festival and has helped its popularity grow steadily in recent years.

The celebration then continues as a classic Madeiran arraial, with the church and the streets of Seixal beautifully decorated, food and drink stalls serving espetada beef skewers, bolo do caco flatbread, fried maize and local wine, and live music late into the night. The religious programme culminates in a solemn mass and the procession of the Blessed Sacrament through the streets of the parish, a moment of deep devotion.

For visitors, the festival is also the perfect excuse to discover Seixal, one of Madeira's most beautiful villages: the famous black-sand Seixal beach and Praia da Laje, the natural pools of Poças das Lesmas, the Véu da Noiva waterfall viewpoint and the terraced vineyards tumbling down to the sea make this area an unmissable destination. Just a few minutes' drive away are the volcanic natural pools of Porto Moniz and the UNESCO-listed Laurisilva forest.

Entry to the arraial is free and the atmosphere is warm and family-friendly. August is high season in Madeira and Seixal fills up during the festival days, so arrive early to find parking and, if possible, stay overnight in the area to enjoy the celebration at a relaxed pace. Those looking for the most genuine side of Madeira will find it here — between sea, mountains and faith, at one of the island's most authentic festas.
