Every year, on the first weekend of September, Vila Real de Santo António celebrates its patron saint, Our Lady of the Incarnation, with three nights of popular festivities in the centuries-old Praça Marquês de Pombal, the heart of the Pombaline city on the banks of the Guadiana River. The Feast of Our Lady of the Incarnation runs from September 2 to 4, 2026, blending religious tradition with musical entertainment for all ages, in a classic Algarve arraial atmosphere.
On Friday, September 2, the programme opens with the Santo António de Arenilha ethnographic group and the Praia da Manta Rota folk ensemble, bringing traditional costumes, songs and dances from the eastern Algarve to the square. On Saturday, September 3, the mood shifts with a performance by artist Baby Lores, promising a night of Latin and Cuban rhythms that will get the whole square dancing. The musical programme closes on Sunday, September 4, with Banda Vide Versus taking the stage for a night of popular Portuguese music.
The religious highlight of the celebrations is the procession in honour of Our Lady of the Incarnation, which winds through the city's main streets on Sunday starting at 6:00 PM, gathering worshippers and onlookers along the route to the parish church.
