Fado and Folklore at Casino da Nazaré

Fado and Folklore is one of the most iconic shows in Nazaré's summer cultural programme, held at the landmark Casino da Nazaré, right by the seafront. Throughout the summer season, the stage welcomes folk groups and fado singers who give voice to Portuguese musical identity in one of the country's most traditional towns.

Nazaré's folklore is unique: the women wear the costume of the famous seven skirts, a symbol of the town, while popular dances and songs recreate the daily life of its seafaring people. To these performances is added fado, recognised by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage, performed to the sound of the Portuguese guitar and viola, carrying the audience through the longing and emotion that only this music can evoke.

The sessions usually take place in the evening, creating an intimate and warm atmosphere at Casino da Nazaré. It is a rare opportunity to witness, in the same venue, two of the most authentic Portuguese cultural expressions, in a programme organised by Nazaré Town Council as part of its "Summer Animation" series.

For those visiting Nazaré in August, the Fado and Folklore show is a perfect complement to beach days and walks up to the Sítio, the clifftop viewpoint over Praia do Norte where the giant waves are born. After dining on fresh fish at the seafront restaurants, visitors can end the night lulled by traditional music.
