Corpus Christi Solemnity - Caminha Flower Carpets

· Caminha

The town of Caminha dresses in color and fragrance for the Corpus Christi Solemnity, with the emblematic flower carpets decorating its streets. A centuries-old tradition involving the communities of Caminha and Vilarelho in creating true works of ephemeral art.

On June 4, 2026, the historic town of Caminha celebrates the Corpus Christi Solemnity with one of the most beautiful religious and popular traditions of the Alto Minho region: the flower carpets. The main streets of the town and the neighboring parish of Vilarelho are transformed into an immense colorful mosaic, composed of flower petals, aromatic plants, and natural materials carefully arranged to welcome the Eucharistic procession.

This is a centuries-old tradition in Caminha that involves the entire community. Families, neighbors, and associations gather the night before and in the early hours of the morning to design and compose the carpets, in a collective gesture of faith, creativity, and identity. Each street symbolically competes to present the most original and finely crafted carpet, with religious, geometric, and floral motifs honoring the passage of the Blessed Sacrament.

The 2026 edition once again features the special participation of the Ponteareas Corpus Christi Carpets Association, from Galicia, recognized by UNESCO for its mastery of this art. This cross-border collaboration strengthens the cultural ties between Alto Minho and Galicia, and enriches the artistic quality of the carpets.

Visitors can freely walk through the decorated streets during the day, before the procession, to admire and photograph the carpets before they are crossed by the religious cortege. The procession traditionally departs from Caminha's Mother Church in the late afternoon, winding through the medieval historic center. Early arrival is recommended, as the event attracts thousands of visitors to the municipality. Admission is free.
