23rd Grand Festival of the Holy Spirit in Ponta Delgada
The largest Holy Spirit celebrations in the Azores return to Ponta Delgada with around 30 religious, cultural and recreational events. From 9 to 12 July, the city fills with ethnographic processions, concerts and the emblematic Coronation of the Empires.
The 23rd Grand Festival of the Holy Spirit in Ponta Delgada takes place from 9 to 12 July 2026, bringing together around 30 religious, cultural and recreational initiatives that make this one of the greatest expressions of faith and tradition in the Azores. Deeply rooted in São Miguel culture and in diaspora communities, the festival is a landmark of the Azorean celebratory calendar.
The opening on 9 July features a photography exhibition, the presentation of the book Terras do Espírito Santo, an academic conference on Azorean religious traditions, and a concert with the premiere of Eis o Espírito de Deus, performed by the Sinfonietta of Ponta Delgada.
On 10 July, the traditional flag ceremony and the opening of the Spirit House take place, alongside gastronomic competitions and musical entertainment. The 11th of July, a day of great devotion, brings charitable distributions to social institutions, the sharing of Holy Spirit soups, and an impressive ethnographic procession uniting all 24 parishes of the municipality, with performances by local brass bands, tenor Carlos Guilherme and musician José Cid.
The highlight comes on 12 July with the Coronation Mass and the Grand Coronation of the Empires of the Holy Spirit, followed by a procession through the city streets. The closing ceremony unfolds in the Municipal Square, with shows by the Myrica Faya Band and the Light Orchestra of Ponta Delgada.
For visitors, it is a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in authentic Azorean culture: tasting the Holy Spirit soups and sweet bread (massa sovada), watching the colourful processions, and experiencing the hospitality of a people that keeps centuries-old traditions alive. The celebrations take place throughout Ponta Delgada's historic downtown and admission is free.
