Snow in Serra da Estrela: Roads and Warnings from Manteigas
Before climbing from Manteigas, cross-check the IPMA snow warning with Infraestruturas de Portugal traffic information and GNR instructions. A warning never guarantees access to Torre.

A snow forecast, a weather warning and an open road are different things. IPMA describes the weather risk; Infraestruturas de Portugal shows incidents and restrictions on the network; on the ground, signage and GNR instructions determine whether you can continue. Seeing snow in a forecast never means that access to Torre is guaranteed.

Make your first check the day before, but repeat it before setting off and again before starting the climb. For road information, the GNR maintains the SOS Trânsito line, 808 201 855. The 112 number is for emergencies, not for confirming whether there is snow or whether a road is open.
Continue or stop: a simple decision
The IPMA snow warning already takes into account the possibility of accumulation, ice and roads being restricted or closed. Even a yellow warning deserves attention: it is not informal permission to climb.

Snowploughs and preventive salting are used to restore traffic conditions. The presence of these resources is not a promise that the road will be open, nor does it make it safe to pass a closure.
The essentials to keep in the car
- Check the tyres and their pressure, lights, brakes, fuel and antifreeze.
- Carry snow chains compatible with your vehicle when conditions warrant them. Having them in the boot does not allow you to ignore signs or instructions.
- Take warm clothing, water, food and a basic first-aid kit.
- Set off with a charged mobile phone and tell someone about your planned route.
- In snow or ice, reduce your speed considerably, increase your stopping distance and avoid acceleration, harsh braking and overtaking.
If you become immobilised, remain calm, give the authorities a reference point and stay in the vehicle unless instructed otherwise. The official recommendation is to call 112 when there is an emergency.
Alternative plans that do not depend on snow
If the higher roads are closed but it is safe to remain in the village, do not spend the day waiting beside a barrier. Take a break at Café Caramelo or Padaria Pastelaria Pão da Vila, checking first that they are open on the day.
When there is no snow and the weather is stable, the mountain still makes the journey worthwhile. The hike in the Zêzere Glacier Valley can replace the rush to Torre, but only with a favourable forecast, suitable ground conditions and no warnings or restrictions. It is not a bad-weather backup plan.
If conditions make mountain activities inadvisable, consider an urban programme such as the self-guided walking route through Belmonte's Sephardic heritage. Changing destinations also requires checking the route conditions in advance. The real alternative plan is not another improvised road through the mountains, but an option that avoids the risk that led to the closure.
