Fraga do Diabo Trail in Mirandela: What to Expect

Barcel does not show up in many Trás-os-Montes itineraries. It is a small parish a few minutes from Mirandela, the kind of place where you stop to ask for directions and end up staying an hour talking to whoever answers. It is also the starting point of the PR7, the Fraga do Diabo Trail, and the stage for one of the few organized hiking events in the region that comes with registration, logistics and a cultural programme built around it: the Tua Festival de Percursos Pedestres.

The festival is organized by ADRVT, the Associação de Desenvolvimento Regional do Vale do Tua, the body that manages the Parque Natural Regional do Vale do Tua. In 2026 the event runs across five municipalities (Alijó, Vila Flor, Murça, Carrazeda de Ansiães and Mirandela), each with its own date and trail. The Mirandela edition happens in Barcel on October 10 and 11, and that is the one that matters here.

The trail: 8.6 km, no rush

The PR7 is a circular route of 8.6 km, rated easy, starting and finishing in Barcel. It passes through the village of Longra and climbs to the Miradouro do Vale da Pala, a viewpoint where the terraced Trás-os-Montes landscape opens up: olive groves and vineyards spread across valleys that drop toward the Tua river. There are no brutal climbs or technical sections, it is a trail built for people walking for pleasure rather than trying to set a record.

Registration closes on September 19, 2026, and each edition is capped at 250 participants, so it is not worth leaving it to the last week. Current prices are:

Registration includes personal accident insurance, a reusable kit (canteen and mug), Sunday's communal lunch, Saturday's cultural activities, and water refill points along the route. The best moment is really Sunday lunch, when everyone has already walked, is hungry, and sits down at the same long table to eat whatever the village prepared.
