Discoteca Alexander's
Santiago do Cacém
Housed in a converted grain cellar at Quinta das Tílias, Discoteca Alexander's in Santiago do Cacém combines two dance floors, a garden with a pool, and a go-kart track. Alentejo nightlife at its most improbable.
There is something wonderfully improbable about driving through the cork oak-lined back roads of Portugal's Alentejo coast and ending up at a nightclub with a swimming pool and a go-kart track. But that is exactly what Discoteca Alexander's delivers. Located at Quinta das Tílias in Valverde, just outside Santiago do Cacém, this converted barn has been the undisputed centre of nightlife in this part of the Alentejo for years.
Santiago do Cacém is better known for its medieval castle, Roman ruins at Miróbriga, and crowd-free beaches along the Alentejo coast. The idea that it also harbours a full-scale nightclub with two dance floors, guest DJs, and live bands might seem improbable. And yet here we are.
The building is a former grain cellar, and you can feel it. High ceilings, thick walls, the kind of volume that purpose-built clubs rarely achieve. Inside, two separate dance floors allow for different music on the same night. Regular bookings of guest DJs and live bands mean the Alexander's programme shifts constantly, sometimes leaning electronic, sometimes more towards live performance.
Outside is where things get interesting in summer. The garden area includes a swimming pool, which during the scorching Alentejo nights from June to September becomes the real draw. And then there are the go-karts. Yes, go-karts. At a nightclub. It sounds absurd until you are actually doing it at 2am, at which point it becomes the highlight of your trip.
The address is Quinta das Tílias, Valverde, 7540 Santiago do Cacém. Valverde is a short drive from the centre of Santiago do Cacém. There is no viable public transport at nightclub hours, so you will need a car, which means designating a driver or arranging a taxi in advance. Call +351 269 829 145 if you need directions.
If you plan to make a night of it, booking accommodation nearby saves the headache. Casas da Moagem, a rural tourism property in the area, is a solid option for waking up the next morning without a long drive ahead.
If you are spending a few days in the area and want to keep costs down, our guide to Santiago do Cacém on a budget covers the essentials. And should the weather turn, there are plenty of indoor options worth your time in the area.
Alexander's is not a cocktail lounge. It is not a wine bar. It is a proper nightclub in a converted barn in the middle of the Alentejo countryside, with go-karts and a pool thrown in for good measure. It does not try to be Lisbon or Porto. It is its own thing entirely, and that is precisely why it works.
If you are passing through Santiago do Cacém, between the beaches and the ruins and the long lunches, give Alexander's one night. It might be the most unexpected thing you do in Portugal.
