Restaurante Pedra Furada
Since 1946, Pedra Furada has served bacalhau and duck rice in a village south of Barcelos, sometimes with live Fado. It is not walkable from the centre and booking is essential at weekends. Come hungry and with time to spare.
Some restaurants chase trends. Then there is Pedra Furada, which has been feeding Barcelos since 1946. Do the maths: that is almost eight decades of bacalhau and duck rice coming out of the same kitchen, in a village that gave the place its name. This is not somewhere that surfaced on Instagram last week. It is where Minho families come for the christening lunch, the Sunday meal that runs until four in the afternoon, the kind of table where nobody checks the time.
Where it is and how to get there
The address is Rua de Santa Leocádia 1415, 4755-392 Pedra Furada. The parish of Pedra Furada sits south of Barcelos, roughly halfway between the town and Póvoa de Varzim, right by the national road that links the two. It is not in the historic centre, so drop any idea of walking here after you have seen the famous rooster. Come by car: it is about ten to fifteen minutes from central Barcelos, and there is room to park, which is half the battle on a busy Sunday.
If you are building a day in Barcelos around a good meal, start early. Before lunch here, see where locals take breakfast seriously in our guide to breakfast in Barcelos before the market. And if you are around in May, the Festa das Cruzes takes over the town and fills the region's dining rooms, this one included.
What to eat
The menu is Minho regional cooking, no detours. Bacalhau is the backbone of the house, done the traditional way, and arroz de pato, duck rice, is the other name you will hear at the neighbouring tables. These two dishes are why people keep coming back. Do not arrive expecting foams or deconstructions. Arrive hungry and with time to spare. Minho portions do not do small, so sharing a starter first is the sensible move.
I am not going to invent the whole menu, because these things change and I do not have it in front of me. If you have a specific dish in mind, call ahead on +351 252 951 144 and ask. That is also the number to book, and on a weekend or a feast day booking is not an extra, it is essential. The place fills up.
Price
You are in the €€ range: a proper meal without a shock at the end, but not the cheapest counter in town either. It is fair value for cooking done well and served in quantity. Check directly if you are after a set lunch or group pricing, because I do not have that verified.
The room and the Fado
The setting is rustic and warm, the sort where wood and stone do the work and nobody felt the need to hire a Lisbon designer. Now and then there is live Fado, and that is what turns an ordinary meal into a night you remember. One important caveat: the Fado is occasional, not nightly. If that is what is bringing you, phone and ask about dates. Do not count on a happy accident; confirm.
Hours
Here I will be straight with you: I do not have verified opening hours, and I am not going to make them up. Before you leave, call and check they are open and when they serve lunch and dinner. The phone call is worth it to avoid a wasted trip, especially if you are coming from outside the district.
Is it worth it?
It is, with one condition: come for what Pedra Furada is, not for what you wish it were. This is honest Minho food, cooked for generations, in a place that is not trying to impress anyone. If you want a trendy brunch or a café with good light for photos, this is not it. For that, head into town to Grava Bike Café or Munchies Café. But if you want to understand what people actually eat in this part of the country, sit down, order the bacalhau or the duck rice, and let the afternoon go.
Travelling with family? A traditional dining room like this usually works well with children, but mention numbers when you book; for more ideas see our honest family guide to Barcelos. And if you want to see the town before or after, Historial Caffé is a good stop in the historic centre. The official site is at https://www.pedrafurada.com, but for bookings the phone is faster.
