Chocolate Market 2026

· Funchal

The Mercado dos Lavradores in Funchal transforms into a chocolate lover's paradise at the end of March, with tastings, workshops, and competitions.

The Chocolate Market is one of the sweetest and most popular gastronomic festivals in Funchal, annually attracting thousands of visitors to the iconic Mercado dos Lavradores. In 2026, the event reaches its 11th edition, taking place between March 29 and April 4. During this thematic week, the third floor of the market transforms into a true temple dedicated to cocoa, where the irresistible aroma of chocolate hangs in the air and the colors of Madeira's tropical fruits blend with the rich hues of artisanal chocolate.

This event, organized by the Funchal City Council, primarily aims to promote the work of local chocolatiers and renowned pastry chefs, encouraging innovation in the use of regional ingredients. One of the most anticipated moments is the competition for the "Best Chocolate Cake in Funchal," now in its 9th edition. In this challenge, professionals and amateurs compete to create the perfect dessert, being evaluated by a demanding jury based on taste, texture, and original presentation.

Visitors can participate in various free activities, including live culinary demonstrations (showcookings), where chefs share secrets about tempering chocolate and creating bonbons filled with typical island flavors like passion fruit or Madeira wine. There are also workshops dedicated to children, allowing them to explore their creativity while learning about the origin of cocoa. The historical setting of the Mercado dos Lavradores, with its tile panels and the typical hustle and bustle of flower sellers, gives this festival an unparalleled charm that captures the essence of Madeiran hospitality.
