Palmela

Palmela is a town on the Setúbal Peninsula and the seat of a municipality within the Lisbon Metropolitan Area. Above the town, Palmela Castle looks out over the region between the Tagus and Sado. It was the Portuguese seat of the Order of Santiago from the 15th to the 19th century and now contains parts of the Municipal Museum and the Church of Santiago.

From the castle to the old town

Walk down from the castle through the steep streets and viewpoints of the historic centre. Praça Duque de Palmela, the town hall and the Church of São Pedro are stops on the municipal tourism route.

In town, the Casa Mãe da Rota de Vinhos da Península de Setúbal presents regional wines and handles bookings for winery visits. Vineyards also extend through the wider municipality, beyond the historic town centre.
