Rota dos Lameiros - Hike in Fornelos, Chaves
Aproveitomomento Cultural and Recreational Association is organising the Rota dos Lameiros, a guided hike through the rural landscape of Fornelos in Chaves, on June 21, 2026. A chance to discover the traditional Trás-os-Montes meadows at the start of summer.
The Rota dos Lameiros is a guided hike through the rural heart of the Chaves municipality, organised by the Aproveitomomento Cultural and Recreational Association, taking place on Sunday, June 21, 2026, with departure scheduled for 8:30 AM from Fornelos.
The route follows the traditional lameiros, permanent natural meadows characteristic of the Trás-os-Montes mountains, where livestock graze freely and biodiversity flourishes. These centuries-old ecosystems, maintained by an ingenious network of irrigation channels, are considered one of the most unique cultural landscapes of northern Portugal and have been recognised as Agricultural Heritage by the FAO.
Along the hike, participants cross oak woodlands, ancient paths and small villages, with stops to observe local flora and hear stories about the traditional ways of life in the region. Early summer is a privileged time to undertake this route: the lameiros are in full green splendour, with wildflowers, butterflies and the constant sound of water running through the irrigation ditches.
The activity is classified as both a cultural tour and a sporting event, suitable for families and hikers with intermediate fitness levels. Comfortable hiking gear, closed shoes, a hat, water and some snacks are recommended. In Chaves, at the end of the hike, participants can also take the chance to explore the famous pastel de Chaves, smoked ham and the Roman thermal baths that made the city famous.
This initiative is part of the early summer celebrations and contributes to the valorisation of Trás-os-Montes rural heritage, introducing local agricultural traditions to residents and visitors alike. Prior registration with the organisers is recommended.
