Friday the 13th - Witches' Night in Montalegre

· Montalegre

The village of Montalegre becomes the Capital of Mysticism on the only Friday the 13th of June 2026. Witches, demons and street animation take over the village for a magical night with a pyromusical show by the castle.

Friday the 13th is undoubtedly Montalegre's most iconic and high-profile event. Since 2002, this small village in the Barroso region has been celebrating every Friday the 13th on the calendar, dressing up in magic, mystery and tradition to welcome thousands of visitors seeking a unique experience in Portugal.

On June 13, 2026 — the only Friday the 13th of the year — the village once again transforms into the Capital of Mysticism. The programme traditionally kicks off at 13:13, with street animation led by witches, demons and fantastic characters who roam the historic streets of the village, creating the festive atmosphere characteristic of this event.

Throughout the day, there is a market of regional products and mystical crafts, exhibitions, Barroso gastronomy, musical moments and activities for all ages. During the afternoon, the programme intensifies with animation in the historic centre, next to Montalegre Castle, the village's emblem and ideal setting for the night's mysterious atmosphere.

At night, the Municipality Square hosts musical performances and, next to the Castle, the highlight of the festival takes place: a pyromusical show that lights up the Trás-os-Montes sky and closes the night in style. Before that, a themed show is staged with witches, demons and fire, telling a story inspired by the region's legends and traditions.

The event, with free entry, is one of the major tourist attractions of inland northern Portugal, drawing tens of thousands of people and generating millions of euros in revenue for the local economy. It is worth booking accommodation well in advance, as demand is very high throughout the municipality.
