Festa de São João in Pitões das Júnias
The mountain village of Pitões das Júnias celebrates São João on June 24, 2026 with one of the most authentic festivals of Barroso. Tradition, folk music and local gastronomy in the heart of Peneda-Gerês National Park.
The Festa de São João in Pitões das Júnias is one of the most authentic religious and popular celebrations in the municipality of Montalegre. On June 24, 2026, this mountain village, located more than 1,100 metres above sea level in the heart of Peneda-Gerês National Park, opens its doors to visitors and devotees for a day of tradition and conviviality.
Pitões das Júnias is considered one of the most beautiful and best-preserved villages in Portugal, known for its granite houses, narrow streets, communal ovens and the famous Monastery of Santa Maria das Júnias, a romantic ruin just minutes from the village. The festival in honour of Saint John is the highlight of the local calendar.
The programme follows the model of traditional Barroso festivals: solemn mass in honour of the saint, procession through the village streets with the image of São João, popular party with traditional music, accordions, dances and the typical improvised singing (cantares à desgarrada). At night, there is the São João bonfire, fireworks and plenty of socialising among neighbours, emigrants returning to their homeland and tourists.
Gastronomy plays a starring role: Barrosã beef steak, smoked sausages, roasted kid, cornbread, mountain honey and convent sweets. Visitors can also explore the village, hike the trail to the waterfall and the monastery, and observe the traditional pastoral life of the region, with Barrosã breed cattle and Serra da Estrela dogs.
It is a free-entry event, ideal for those seeking a genuine cultural and rural tourism experience in Portugal. It is recommended to arrive early, given the difficult accessibility and the growing number of visitors looking for authentic Trás-os-Montes.
