The Rug is on the Street 2026

· Arraiolos

From June 3rd to 7th, Arraiolos celebrates its iconic embroidered rug with five days of exhibitions, street performances, talks and concerts featuring artists such as Carolina Deslandes, Quatro e Meia, Átoa and Teresinha Landeiro. A unique festival that turns the historic centre into a living open-air museum.

The Rug is on the Street returns to Arraiolos from June 3rd to 7th, 2026, transforming the historic centre of this Alentejo town into an authentic open-air gallery dedicated to the world-famous Arraiolos Rug. Promoted by the Municipality of Arraiolos, this event celebrates the artisanal know-how that has distinguished the region for centuries and which recently received IEFP certification, limiting authentic production to the municipality.

Over five days, streets, squares, doors, windows and balconies are adorned with embroidered rugs, while local embroiderers demonstrate live the traditional techniques passed down through generations. Visitors can interact directly with the artisans, learn about the history of this unique art form and purchase authentic pieces.

The programme includes exhibitions, street animation, talks and debates on intangible heritage, regional gastronomy and various activities for all ages. In the evening, the musical line-up promises memorable moments with renowned names from Portuguese music:

  • June 3rd – Carolina Deslandes
  • June 4th – Quatro e Meia
  • June 6th – Átoa
  • June 7th – Teresinha Landeiro

According to Mayor Jorge Macau, the event aims to "value, safeguard and promote this cultural heritage, energise the local economy involving all economic agents and establish Arraiolos as a cultural destination". Visiting Arraiolos during this period is a rare opportunity to immerse yourself in the essence of the Alentejo, with its whitewashed architecture, the medieval castle on top of the hill and the genuine hospitality of its people.

Admission is free and the event takes place in various points of the historic centre. Early arrival is recommended on concert days to ensure a good spot.
