São João da Pesqueira Festival 2026
The village of São João da Pesqueira celebrates its patron saint with three days of festivities, music, tradition and gastronomy in the heart of the Douro wine region. Popular marches, grilled sardines and live concerts liven up Praça do Marquês from 22 to 24 June.
From 22 to 24 June 2026, São João da Pesqueira dresses up for its biggest celebration of the year: the Festa de São João, in honour of the patron saint of this Douro village. For three days, Praça do Marquês becomes the epicentre of one of the most authentic celebrations in the Alto Douro Wine Region, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The programme includes traditional popular marches (marchas populares), with local groups dressed in colourful costumes parading to the sound of traditional Portuguese music. Children's marches usually open the festivities, followed by senior marches, in a spectacle of colour, rhythm and Douro identity that involves the entire community.
Evenings come alive with concerts by popular Portuguese artists on the main stage, with DJs closing each night until dawn. The festival spreads through the streets of the village with arraiais (street parties), dances and parades that extend the merriment until sunrise.
The gastronomic component is unmissable: the São João food stalls (tasquinhas) serve traditional seasonal delicacies, especially grilled sardines, caldo verde (kale soup), freshly baked bread and, of course, the excellent Douro wines produced at the estates surrounding the municipality. It is a unique opportunity to taste the authentic flavours of the region, accompanied by stunning views over the Douro valley.
For visitors choosing to extend their stay, São João da Pesqueira offers a privileged territory to explore: the São Salvador do Mundo viewpoint, the terraced vineyards, the Port wine estates and the proximity to the Douro river make this village an unmissable destination in June.
Entry to the festival events is free, making it a moment of fellowship between locals and visitors that has continued for generations. Booking accommodation in advance is recommended, given the growing demand for this celebration that blends religious tradition, popular culture and the wine-making soul of the Douro.
