Mário Viegas Exhibition: The Reciter and the Actor
A traveling exhibition at Galeria Municipal João Bailote celebrating the life and work of the iconic Portuguese actor Mário Viegas.
From March 2nd to 29th, 2026, the Galeria Municipal João Bailote hosts a moving traveling exhibition dedicated to one of the most charismatic figures of 20th-century Portuguese culture: Mário Viegas. Organized by the LPV association in collaboration with the National Theatre Museum and the Municipality of Albufeira, this show marks the 40th anniversary of the April Revolution and the artistic legacy left by the actor. Mário Viegas was much more than just a stage and screen actor; he was the great 'reciter' of Portuguese poetry, giving voice and soul to the verses of Fernando Pessoa, Mário de Sá-Carneiro, and many others, making literature accessible to all through radio and television.
The exhibition offers a detailed journey through his personal and professional career. Visitors can appreciate a vast collection including rare photographs, manuscripts, stage props, and emblematic costumes that marked his most famous performances. Informative panels explore his deep connection to freedom of speech and his active role in cultural dynamism after the 25th of April. The exhibition also highlights his satirical humor and his unique ability for declamation, which made him an immortal figure in the collective imagination. The Galeria Municipal João Bailote, located in downtown Albufeira, provides the ideal setting for this cultural reflection, open to the public from Tuesday to Saturday with free admission. It is an unmissable opportunity for tourists and residents to dive into the history of performing arts in Portugal and discover the man behind the voice that still echoes today.
