Festa das Cruzes 2026 - Festival of the Crosses
Minho's first major pilgrimage returns to Barcelos with its iconic flower carpets, traditional arches, and the colorful 'Battle of Flowers'.
The Festa das Cruzes (Festival of the Crosses) is the most significant event in Barcelos and the first major 'romaria' (pilgrimage festival) of the year in the Minho region. With origins dating back to the 16th century—specifically the 'Miracle of the Cross' in 1504—this celebration transforms the historical center of Barcelos into a stage of color, faith, and folk tradition. In 2026, the festivities reach their peak during the last week of April, leading up to the municipal holiday on May 3rd.
One of the most iconic attractions is the monumental Natural Flower Petal Carpets, meticulously handcrafted inside the Temple of Lord Bom Jesus da Cruz. These carpets are true masterpieces of ephemeral art that draw thousands of visitors from across the country. Outside, the streets are decorated with 'Arcos de Romaria' (Pilgrimage Arches), illuminated structures representing the various parishes of the municipality, creating a unique corridor of light and color.
The festival program is extensive and diverse. Tourists can witness the 'Battle of Flowers,' a vibrant parade where floats and folklore groups shower the audience with petals and flowers in an atmosphere of pure joy. Music takes center stage with concerts by major national artists on the Riverside stage, alongside constant street entertainment provided by 'Zés P'reiras' (drummer groups), folklore dance groups, and philharmonic bands. The regional gastronomy, featuring the famous roasted rooster ('galo assado') and local Vinho Verde, completes the sensory experience for anyone visiting Barcelos during this magical time.
